A group of 829 workers were killed and 1,041 critically injured at various work related incidents across the country on last six months of 2009.

Bangladesh Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Foundation (OSHE) revealed an OSH survey report after monitoring sixteen leading daily newspapers of the country from January 1, to June 30. Of the total, highest number of causalities (552) took place at garment sector, followed by transport sector (486) and construction sector (95).

The survey also revealed that some 186 workers were killed and 149 others injured in incidents while traveling to and from the workplaces; 282 transport workers killed and 112 others injured in road accidents and 66 killed; and six others injured in other incidents (i.e. heatstroke).

Week enforcement of existing health and safety probations under the Bangladesh Labour Act-2006, lack of effective labour inspection system at enterprise/workplace level, lack of basic OSH management structure at enterprise/workplace level (i.e. bi-partite OSH committee etc.), employer negligence on OSH related issues, inadequate occupational health services, lack of basic OSH training and awareness programme for workers at workplaces level were key factors behind those occupational accidents occurred at workplace on last six months.
