622 killed, 395 critically injured in last six months at different Occupational Accidents around the country.
Dhaka July 27: Some 622 workers were killed and 395
others injured in various work related incidents across the country on
last six month in this year (1 January to 30 June, 2011).
Bangladesh Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Foundation (OSHE)
revealed the said statistics after monitoring fifteen national daily
newspapers from January 1 to June 30, 2011.
Of the total, highest number of causalities took place in the transport
sector (197) followed by garments sector (90), pharmaceuticals sector
(67), construction sector (60), day laborer (59), and agriculture (44).
It was found in the survey that, 418 workers were killed and 312 critically injured at different workplaces around the country.
The survey also found that, some 204 workers were killed and 83 others injured in incidents while traveling to and from the workplaces.
Weak enforcement of exiting labour law (BLA-2006) at workplaces, poor
labour inspections, lack of awareness, sensitization, health and safety
training among workers, absence of OSH committee at workplaces level,
lack of decent wage and defective industrial relations were
some of the key reasons for growing occupational accidents, workers
rights violations and labour unrests in the country.
