Called for more
pro-active action by trade unions |

The HIV/AIDS pandemic feeds on
inequity, poverty, poor education and lack of access
to health care, prevention and treatment. Fighting
these problems is core business for the labour
movement. Unions the world over are tackling
HIV/AIDS through workplace programmes, community
education, legislative action and global solidarity.
As part of the Global Unions work programme on HIV
and AIDS, the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC)
organised a Labour Forum on AIDS in Toronto from
11-13 August 2006.
Around 100 trade unionist and labour activists
from all over the world attend said event to share
the experiences and actions by trade unions fight
against the killer virus HIV and protection of
rights of the workers at workplaces.
The Labour Forum on AIDS bringing together trade
unionists working on HIV/AIDS from around the world,
this two-day labour forum will provide an
opportunity to learn from each other’s experience
and develop strengths and strategies to better
respond to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
A.R. Chowdhury REPON, Executive Director of
Bangladesh Occupational Safety, Health and
Environment Foundation (OSHE) and the International
Secretary of Bangladesh Free Trade Union Congress (BFTUC)
attended said important HIV/AIDS event in Toronto as
prior to the International AIDS Conference and
shared achieved experiences in Bangladesh by OSHE
and its partner national trade union centres in the
area of HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention among
workers and union members in different vulnerable
sectors.
Labour Forum on AIDS organised by CLC emphasized for
the need of more coordinated trade union action
towards fight against HIV infection and need for
easy access of victim workers in to existing
treatment facilities and social protection without
any discrimination. |
