As a part of workers’ education on “Bangladesh Labour Act,
2006”, a number of 12 study circles were held in the period
of 1st February 2010 to 31st March 2010 with the active
participation of ship breaking workers from different
ship yard under OSHE / FNV project. A total number
of 175 workers from A.B. Taher Ship yard, Natun Ambia
yard, Habib Steel, Prime Steel, Kadam Rasul Steel,
New Kabir Steel, Ziri Subedar, Unique Steel,
Bhatiary Steel, k.I.U. Steel,Kashem Master, Makka
Steel etc. participated in these programmes.

The ultimate goal of this programme is
to increase knowledge of ship breaking
workers about Bangladesh Labour Act,
2006 intending to establish their rights regarding health and safety at work.
The study circles were facilitated by 6 NTUC’s leaders named Md. Safar Ali,International Affairs Secretary of Jatio
Sramik League, Md. Jalal Ahmed, General Secretary of Bangladesh Sanjukto Sramik Federation, Rizwanur Rahman Khan,
Joint Secretary of Bangladesh Free Trade Union Congress, Dilip Kumar Nath, Office Secretary of Trade Union Kendra,
Md. Nurul Afsar, General Secretary of Bangladesh Labour Federation and Md. Mofizrur Rahman,
Joint Secretary of Bangladesh Jatio Sramik Jote in Chittagong division who are involved in
OSHE/ FNV project as team members. Facilitators discussed about different legal rights of
workers such as: workers recruitments & conditions; working hour; overtime; leave; wages;
occupational health & safety; compensation; trade union; labor welfare; special benefits;
discharge; retrenched; retirement etc. etc using the learning materials i.e. OSH booklet,
Labour Law-2006, asbestos poster & sticker.
