OSHE Initiative: Health Care Service for Ship Breking Workers

A health care centre for ship breaking workers is functioning from August 2008 to still now at Bhatiary Link Road  in district of Sitakunda in Chittagong with the own initiative of Bangladesh Occupational Health, Safety and Environment Foundation OSHE. Distressed and casualty workers of ship breaking industry of this area would get medical treatments, consultation and medicines free of cost from the centre. The doctors would attend the patients for three-day a week for three hours in each of day.

  OSHE is providing this service apart of carryout motivational and awareness campaign among the ship breaking workers on taking measure for prevention of occupational diseases and reduce accidents. The ultimate goal of this service is to improve working Environment of ship breaking industry promoting health and safety at work.

 

According to monthly reports of this centre for the month of January to June 2010 we found that a number of forty eight ship breaking workers on an average of 2 workers per day received this service claiming injury of accident, pain of hurt, back and bone pain, cough, cold, vomiting, fever and headache.

 

It is also found in this report that the medical officer of this centre is provided consultation about the bad effect of drug addiction, sexual diseases, awfulness of HIV/AIDS and deadly asbestos while they came to receive the medical treatment. In case of critical injury and diseases, the medical officer of this centre is provided referral services to specialized doctor getting better treatment.

As part of developing the value of this service, in this report the medical officer of this centre recommended to provide full time service and mobile clinic service in case of remote area. In addition, for better output he recommended to raise the fund for medicine.
