A HUMAN CHAIN WAS FORMED

CALLED FOR AN URGENT OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY

As a specialized labour Foundation concerned with improving the health and Safety conditions of workers in Bangladesh, Bangladesh Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Foundation (OSHE) organized a human-chain in front of national press club, Dhaka on 27 April 2010 with demanding for enacting an urgent occupational Health and Safety policy to mark the “World Day for Safety and Health at Work-28 April 2010”.
 
Leaders and activists of trade unions and representatives from different NGOs and civil society groups joined the human chain. Saki Rezwana, Charperson of OSHE was present in the event. She delivered her speech and met the different attended journalist & channels. A key note paper on the overview and the significance of World Day for Safety and Health at Work was present in the event.

The paper is noted that in order to focus public attention on safe work issues, the International labour organization (ILO) has declared this day as “World Day for Safety and Health at Work”.

Director of FBCCI M Balayet Hossain said if any fire incident breaks out in Midford area, old town of Dhaka, it will not be possible to bring the blaze under control as huge amount chemical are kept and used in the factories there.





It is also stated that according to the World Health Organizations (WHO) report every year a total of two million workers died and 1.2 million were injured because of insecure and unhealthy environment where according to a survey conducted by OSHE, in 2009 a total of 1,639 workers and 1,858 were injured because of workplace hazards in Bangladesh. In addition, the paper mentioned that many child laborers were working in various chemical units.


The leaders and the activists of different labour organizations said that the issue of safety and health environment for the workers had been neglected for a long time. So they stressed the need for amending the Bangladesh Labour law-2006.



Saki Rezwana, Chairman of the OSHE, said they had already submitted a draft National Occupational Health and Safety Policy to the Ministry of Labour and Employment.


In addition, she said that they also forwarded to the government several recommendations that included a national occupational health policy, a national safety council and implementation of the Bangladesh Labour Law, 2006 relating to sections 5,6 and 7 on occupational health and safety.
