Bangladesh Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Foundation (OSHE) conducted a survey based upon published reports of 12 national daily newspapers from January to December 2006 revealed that, 772 workers killed and 4,453 critically injured at workplaces in different sectors due to workplace accidents caused by poor enforcement of occupational safety and health related labour laws and lack of workplace accident prevention system.

Based upon industry-wise analysis, the OSHE findings shows that, rate of fatal accident and injury was higher in the ready made garments industries (172 were killed and 2,703 injured) followed by construction sector (163 were killed and 385 critically injured) and road transport sector (91 killed) as compare to other industrial sectors due to extremely hazardous working condition and poor safety facilities.

Highest Accident Rate (Sector-wise)

Number -1: Ready Made Garments
Number -2: Construction
Number -3 : Road Transport

The report also indicated that, as an impact of nationwide campaign by the OSHE together with its associated National Trade Union Centes of Bangladesh, the probation for setting up a tripartite National Safety Council has been included in the new labour law (Bangladesh Labour Act 2006) and Asbestosis has been recognized as a listed occupational disease in Bangladesh.
