Development Project in AGRO-BASED Industry Home
 

Agriculture is the main economic sector in Bangladesh and major contributor in employment market.

Rice mill industry plays an important role in local food market. Approximately 40,000 rice mills in the country, which have almost 5 millions of unorganized workers, more than 60% of them are female.
 

 

The industry is mostly uncovered by labour law and labour inspection system.

The workers in rice mill work under severe shining sun and dust. Lung and stomach problem, asthma, diarrhea, dysentery are common diseases among the rice mill workers.

There are many types of accident on the rice mills like boiler blast; turning the ribbon of haler machine; cutting off fingers by machine; fracture of hand and leg; neck pain due to carrying sacks full of paddy or rice.

It was estimated that apx. 1000 workers killed and around 5000 critically injured over the last ten years due to boiler blast and other type of work place accident in rice mills.

 
 
Workers and employees are not aware about safety issues, not organized on safety issue and does not know the way to improve the safety status  
 
OSHE with the cooperation of the Toyota Foundation (Japan), implementing a two years development project known as GRAIN [Global (Globalized Localism) Relationship of Agriculture Improvements in Bangladesh] in the area of Ashugonj under B.Baria Dristrict.

The overall aim of this innovative project of OSHE is to improve working condition, workers rights and environmental protection status in the sector by participatory actions.
 
Core Project Objectives
ü Develop specific Action Checklist and OSH Training Manual for Rice Mill industries.
ü Training of Health and Safety Trainers (Workers and Employers Group)
ü Organized factory based participatory safety improvement education prog.
ü Experience sharing visit in other Asian Countries.
ü Establishment of Local Health and Safety Network
ü Develop social dialogue and sound industrial relations among workers and employers in rice mills.
